The brilliance of Taj Mahal lies in its every aspect; from the glitters of semi-precious stones to the grandeur of the gateway. The flawless architecture of Taj Mahal beckons tourists from all over the world and also besides it with the title of a UNESCO world heritage site.
Taj Mahal glows as a pearl from distance and as you approach the edifice, each and every feature of the monument becomes clear. Out of the five major components of the building, the gateway is a major part.
The Taj Mahal gateway is a blend of Hindu and Islamic architecture. While the Hindu motifs adore the monument, the arched gateway is an important segment of the complete symmetrical structure. The gateway is the first place in the monument where the rich calligraphy work is exhibited. Black jasper inlayed in white marble stone had given a different dimension to the holy verses of Quran; the Arabic inscriptions are beautifully handwritten in Thulth script. The font size of the letters is increased as per the height of the gateway; as the height increases, the size of letters increase consistently, providing a magnificent optical illusion.
The gateway of Taj Mahal is intact till date being supported by side towers. These are made of eight different kinds of metals and come with knobs. Portraying the sorrow of the emperor is a motif of white tear drop with a red trident, located at the pointed tip of the entrance. Entwined flowers, red lotus floral motifs, leaves and vines exhibit fantastic Hindu art over the Taj Mahal gateway. The motifs are bejewelled with semi-precious stones, glittering through the white marble.
The gateway of Taj Mahal is just not an entrance but is a huge chamber with a group of rooms with an arched, decorative roof. The cluster of rooms within the Taj gateway confuses the pathway of the monument and it is still a mystery why these tombs were built. Matter of fact, these rooms under the gateway had been built 300 years ago but never had been used.
Hence, do not ignore the beautifully crafted gateway of Taj Mahal. It is a majestic piece of artwork that demand the attention of all tourists.
