Assi Ghat is the ghat located in the southernmost part of the city. It is the place where you can find the residence of foreign students, tourists and researchers.
The ghat is located near Shivala in Varanasi. This ghat is located where river Assi joins with the River Ganges.
The ghat is more crowded during evenings and during Shivratri celebration. In the early morning, you can find many rituals and activities happening in the ghat. It is best visited during winter due to the calm climate. During eclipse, you can find many people taking a holy dip in this ghat.
Every hour, more than 300 people visit the ghat during morning and more than 2500 people visit the ghat in the evening. Ganga Aarti is also performed in Assi Ghat. Though it is not as famous as the one conducted in Dashashwamedh Ghat, it is the second famous Aarti that is visited by tourists.
You can hire boats from the ghat for sightseeing. Boat ride is quite expansive at the time of Ganga Aarti. Early morning Ganga Aarti Ceremony is also conducted in this ghat. Early morning yoga sessions will also be conducted in this ghat. The ghat suites people who want to get away from the crowd and enjoy the river in peace.
Near the ghat, you can find a large lingam under a huge peepal tree. People take a holy dip in the river, carry some water with them and pour it over the lingam.
There are many legendary stories related to the birth of the ghat. According to one, Lord Durga threw her sword in the river after killing a demon, which became the ghat.
There are numerous tiny shops near the ghat for shopping and eating. Those who visit the ghat for early morning rituals enjoy hot lemon tea served in some shops.
