Magnetic Hill , Ladakh

Magnetic Hill is a small hill located near Leh. It is famous for an optical illusion of its slopes that look like an uphill route. Thus, cars when left in neutral will look like driving up the hill when it is actually sliding down the slope. Leave your vehicle in the boxes marked on the road. This illusion can be enjoyed only in specific areas. Parking your vehicle elsewhere will leave you disappointed. There are only three such hills in India.

Magnetic Hill Attractions

Once on the hill, switch off the engine and put the gear in neutral. You can feel your vehicle going up the hill (illusion) at 20 km/hr speed. Apart from this experience, the next main activity is to hear old tales about this hill from locals. There are numerous stories that link the hill to be the route to heaven. Top activities to enjoy here are yak safari, trekking, mountain climbing, camping and others. During summer, most of the activities will be available to the tourists.

Best time to visit Magnetic Hill

The best time to visit is during the summer season. The temperature will be mild enough to enjoy the exploration. Summer starts in July and ends in September. The route is open throughout the year. During winter, the view of the surrounding regions will be hindered. It would take not more than 30 minutes to enjoy this hill. The route is open from 8 in the morning to 5 in the evening. People generally visit this hill on their route to Indus Zanskar confluence, Suru Valley or Zanskar Valley.

How to reach Magnetic Hill

Located 30 km away from Leh, this hill is located on the route towards Kargil. On the Leh-Srinagar highway, you can find a large board welcoming you to the hill.

Shopping & Dinning in Magnetic Hill

There are no shops or hotels on or near the hill. However, Leh is just 30 km away from the region and people visit Leh for refreshing or other activities.
