Thiksey Monastery, Ladakh

When you visit the Thiksey Monastery, all you feel is mesmerized. The monastery is settled at an altitude of 11,800 feet. The place is looked after by the people of the Yellow Hat sect. It resembles the Potala Palace of Lhasa. The monastery was first built by Sherab ZangpoIt in Stakmo, it was later built on the hilltop where it is located now by his nephew Paldan Sherab. This is a twelve storied monastery which in-houses ten beautiful temples. The main prayer hall at the monastery has a 40-foot massive Statue of Lord Buddha seated on a Lotus. Apart from this, there is a temple dedicated to Goddess Tara.

Maitreya Buddha is one of the famous attractions to see inside the Thiksey Monastery. Tara Temple and Lamokhang Temple are two famous temples to visit in Thiksey Monastery.

There are many rare statues, stupas, and artifacts like swords, painting, etc. on display here. Every tenth month of the Tibetian Calendar marks The Thiksey Gustor Festival. During this festival, visitors can enjoy the Cham dances or the Sacred Mask prepared by the in-house monks and nuns.

Best time to visit Thiksey Monastery

The best time to visit Thiksey Monastery is in the month of October and November. After November the monastery will be closed due to heavy snowfall. The monastery remains open from 7 am in the morning to 7 pm in the evening all days of the weeks.

The Thiksey Monastery is located 17 kilometers of Leh. It is the best monastery in Ladakh if you wish to look for some solitude. You can find buses, cabs and other vehicles from Leh. Ladakh is connected with many other states of the country via airport in Leh.
