Overview

Yamunotri is the Western most shrine of the Chardham and is the source of the river Yamuna. This is situated on the top of Bandarpoonch Parvat. This is the temple that is devoted to Goddess Yamuna. The actual source of the river Yamuna is the Champasar Glacier or the Yamunotri glacier. This is located at a distance of 1 km from the temple that is there on the Kalind Mountain. It is however, not accessible. Therefore the temple is worshipped as the source of the Yamuna.

In order to reach Yamunotri, you will have to trek for about 7 kilometers from Janki Chatti. This temple was built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. The deity in this temple is made of black marble. Yamuna is considered as the divine mother according to the Hindu Mythology.

There are hot water springs near the temple that form Kunds. Among this Surya Kund is the most essential. There is a rock near Divya Shila which is referred to as the Kund. Divya Shila is worshipped before the deity.

The devotees prepare rice and potato by tying it to a muslin cloth and then dipping them in the hot water springs. Then offer this to the deity. The rice is after that taken back as the prasad. During winters this temple remains closed as this area is prone to very heavy snow fall.
