Ukhimath is a religious place that is believed to be visited by Kedarnath ji during the winter season. Tungnath also comes under Ukhimath in the winter season. This is a part of the district of Rudraprayag. Ukhimath is a Hindu journey site and a residential area. This is located at a height of about 1311 meters and is at a distance of 41 kilometers from Rudraprayag.
The Ukhimath can be used also as a focus goal to go to the better places that are nearby it. These places include Madhmaheshwar that is also referred to as the second Kedar, Tungnath which is the third kedar and Deoria Tal and numerous pleasant places. There are a number of hotels in this place as well.
It is believed that as per the Hindu mythology, the grandson of Lord Krishna, Anirudh and Usha, the daughter of Vanasur were solemnized. This place was named after Usha and therefore referred to as the Ushamath. In this place, the winter puja of Kedarnath and the year round puja of Omkareshwara is performed. This sanctuary is arranged at Ukhimath which is situated at a distance of 41 kilometers from Rudraprayag.
Ukhimath has a number of old sanctuaries dedicated to a few Gods and Goddesses is present here. Some of these Gods and Goddesses include Lord Shiva, Aniruddha, Parvati and Madhata. There is also an All India Radio relay station available that is known as Akashvani Ukhimath. This basically communicates on the FM frequencies.
As per the Hindu Folklore, the Devas washed in this lake and therefore it was named this way. The lake is therefore referred to as the Indra Sarovar. This is also the place from which the pandavas came to know about Yaksha. This is also the place that was used by Bheem to drink waters. Bheem was the most grounded in comparison to the other Pandava brothers.
This is a little locale that has a range of the evergreen timberland. This is a piece of the untamed life of Kedarnath asylum that is situated in the state of Uttarakhand. This is also a trekking base to Tungnath. This is also the third sanctuary of the panch kedar which lies 3.5 kilometers away. This is situated at a distance of 1.5 kilometers from the Tungnath.
This is permanently connected to the Panch Kedar sanctuaries. As per the legend, wise rishi Vyas told the Pandavas that they were at fault of killing their own relatives in the Kurukshetra during the Mahabharata. Therefore their demosntration could only be acquitted by Lord Shiva and no one else. Thus the Pandavas went to look for Lord Shiva who was staying away from them because he was persuaded of the guilt of Pandavas.
You can visit this place any time during the year while you are visiting for Chardham yatra . This is a town that has an excellent summer climate. The temperature here is also exceptionally good during the summers. There is a cool wind blowing and a delightful climate. The winters here also are quite enjoyable. But if you are visiting this place during the winters, you should carry thick woolen garments. The town looks beautiful throughout the year and it is full of greeneries.
The Jolly Grant airport is the closest to Ukhimath. Rishikesh is nearest railway station and the distance between Rishikesh and Ukhimath is about 190 kilometers. This is located on NH& and there are taxis and buses to Ukhimath from Delhi, Chandigarh, Rishikesh and Haridwar.
