Gangotri is situated at a height of about 3048 on the banks of the Bhagirathi river. This is considered to be the second dham and is the highest and the most important shire of Goddess Ganga. This temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa.
He was the Gorkha general in the 18th century. It is worshipped as the source of the Ganges. Gaumukh, which is the source of the Ganga, is situated at a distance of 18 kms from the Ganges. You can reach it via a trekking route.
Gangotri offers the beautiful scenes of the gushing water, snow clad mountains and rough terrains. Gangotri plays a very important role in the Hindu Mythology. According to the traditional beliefs, Ganga was received by Lord Shiva in his matted locks at a time when the river came down from the Heaven to the earth.
There is also an original rock shivling submerged under water. You can see this during the winter at a time when the levels of the water decrease. This temple remains closed on the day of the Diwali. It remains closed during the winters due to the heavy snowfall. The temple cannot be reached in Winters and it opens again in the month of May.
