BACKWATERS
Kumarakom slumbers on the banks of the very famous Vembanad Lake. This lake with its majestic canals, distributaries and streams along its banks entwine an elaborate and interestingly beautiful web. BIRD SANCTUARY
The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, also referred to as an ornithologist's paradise, is home to a lot of migratory birds like the Siberian stork, darter, egret, teal and the heron. Most of these birds come here from the Himalayas and Siberia.

Pathiramanal also known as sands of midnight, another captivating island on the lake, can is also reachable by boat from here. This island is home to many more extraordinary and exotic variety of migratory birds. You can also get to see many more birds like owl, egret cuckoo, water ducks, wood beetle etc. The best time for bird watching is between June and august and for migratory birds is between November to February.


PLACES OF INTEREST
Apart from the cruises on the backwaters, there are many other places to visit in Kumarakom. Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls is a beautiful picnic spot with a stream tinkling and later roaring while cascading down the mountain.  You can also visit Kottayam to see the famous churches there and thousands of people gather here during the festive season. The ettumanoor Shiva temple which is 12 kms away from here has some exceptionally beautiful wall painting on its walls. Eurumely, Aranmula, Vagamon, Elaveezha Poonchira and Vaikom are few other interesting places to visit on the holiday to Kumarakom.

You can come and cruise along the backwaters and a take a glance of the rural life here or watch the lush paddy vegetation, flocked by the ducks and many other migratory birds or sail on the canoes, boats or houseboats silently and just listen to the voices of the birds. All this will liven up the image of the everlasting beauty for which Kumarakom is famous.
