  • Wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala

    • Periyar wildlife Sanctuary :

      • Where : Thekkady, Kerala

      The park is rich with 35 mammal species and more than 260 species of birds apart from the migration birds. Thereare 143 species of orchids which will be at bloom during the early summer. There are more than 1800 flowering plant species inside the sanctuary.

      The park is a heritage site famous forspoting king cobra, rollers, macaques and others. You can find many varieties of birds here too. Trekking is allowed only for those who have received prior permission from the state forest department. There are native tribes inside the region.

      The park is rich with interesting wild animals like sambhar, tiger, jungle cats, wild dogs and others. Prior permission should be obtained for trekking. Boat rides are available during winter season. You can find herds of elephants with cubs during summer season. The best time to visit is during winter and early summer. However, animal spotting is very common during summer season.

    • Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary :

      • What : Sandalwood forest, watchtowers, camping, trekking, nature walk, waterfall and others
      • Best time to visit : Winterand early summer (December to April)

      The park receives rainfall for just 48 days in a year and has a unique vegetation. You can find small animals and herbivorous commonly here as the region is filled with shrub forest. If you are visiting during the tourism season, you can camp inside the sanctuary with permission. Tourists can use the watchtowers to spot animals.

    • Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary :

      The park covers a lush valley, which is famous for large animals like elephants, leopards, tigers, bears and others. It is a part of Nilgiri biosphere. You can enjoy elephant ride throughout the year inside the sanctuary.

      • Where : Near Agasthakoodam, Kerala
