Taj Shrouded in Myths

As the monument is immensely beautiful, it is obvious that people exercise their minds to much extent. People think that how the name of the Taj Mahal has been named.

The nearest explanation to its name can be found in its interpretation equivalent to the Persian language. As Taj means Crown and the word Mahal means place or area, Taj Mahal is recognized as a "Place of the Crown".

Amidst all the myths, there’s another, which says that Taj Mahal is the monument that has been named after Mumtaz Mahal, wife of Shah Jahan.

The original name of Mumtaz Mahal was Arjumand Banu Begum, which was later christened as Mumtaz Mahal. Moreover, Taj Mahal is believed to be a shorter version of Mumtaz Mahal.

As India has always remained pluralistic in character, there are some who believe that Taj Mahal's name is derived from the name of a Shiva Temple, "Tejo Mahalaya". It is felt by most the people, believing in this theory that Taj Mahal was a temple earlier and was taken over by Shah Jahan to be named Taj Mahal thereafter.
