Elephant Festival


ELEPHANT FESTIVAL AT THRISSUR
Elephant Festival is one of the outstanding plays of light and sound. It is one of the biggest of all elephant festivals in the state of India, ‘Thissur Pooram’ is a 36-hour long affair dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Hindu God. It is believed that King Sakthan, who ruled Cochin in the late 18th century, started the festival. The festival commenced with the arrival of a small elephant processions, which carried their respective deities from various temples in different villages across Thrissur, and culminated at the grounds of Vadakumnathan temple. Hindus revere elephants as an incarnation of elephant god Ganesha, the Lord of luck and prosperity. For foreign tourists, the festival is an excellent opportunity to get a taste of Indian tradition and culture.

Thrissur - The Cultural Capital of Kerala
'Puram' is the most colorful temple festival of Thrissur, It attracts thousands of people to witness the grand elephant procession. It is basically a show of caparisoned elephants and exchange of huge colorful umbrellas, which are made secretly and produced on the final day and exchanged as the opponent temples change their umbrella. The umbrella varies from different shapes, size and color. Each temple spends days and lakhs of rupees to make these umbrellas. The word “Pooram” literally means a group or a meeting and it is believed that the gods and goddesses meet for a day of celebration, which falls in the month of April-May every year.

The Charm of Thrissur Puram 
Come and Color Yourself With The Festivals of Kerala, Thrissur Puram is a two-centuries old temple festival known for its unique pomp and pageantry. Beautifully caparisoned elephants in two processions representing the Thiruvambadi and Paramekkavu temples compete to create impressive sights and sounds. The celebration eventuates in the early hours of the dawn and continues till the break of the next day. Each group is allowed to perform with a maximum of fifteen elephants and extensive efforts are made by each party to insure the best elephants of South India and the most colourful and artistic cloaks, several kinds of which are raised on the elephants during the display. Experience the incredible parade of 30 richly caparisoned elephants at the Vadakkumnathan temple, each escorted with three efficient priests sitting atop them. Walk along the streets of Thrissur and see locales dressed in colorful attires painting a new world of divinity at every corner of their city. Another major attraction of the festival was the famous Elanjithara Mellam, a percussion show performed by hundreds of artist using drums, air pipe and cymbals. Thousands of people showed their enthusiasm by jumping and dancing to the rhythms of drums and cymbals during the percussion show. It is the main attraction of this festival because of its grandeur and fame with so many artists.
